The signing of the Security Protocol for the reopening of schools in September was scheduled for today, but seems to be postponed until tomorrow. Among the points that the document will have to clarify is what happens if a student tests positive for Covid-19.

It seems that it is now a matter of hours and then we will finally have an official Security Protocol, necessary to guarantee the opening of the new school year. The Minister of Education Azzolina, in a meeting with the school unions, is deciding the final details but it seems that the negotiation is not yet concluded as Orizzonte Scuola announces that a new meeting is set for tomorrow, August 6, at 7 a.m. morning.

Just yesterday, however, the guidelines for the 0-6 range were approved.

According to what has already been leaked, although still to be confirmed with the official document, the Security Protocol provides for signs inside schools with separate entry and exit, visitor entry reduced to a minimum, secretarial services accessible only by appointment, mask obligation for who enters the institute and voluntary test for school staff at the beginning of teaching activities.

Obviously, the daily and periodic sanitation of all environments will also be guaranteed and, new, the opening of a call center to which teachers, students and families will be able to refer, active from 24 August from Monday to Saturday.

In case a student tests positive for Covid-19

Many are wondering: what will happen if a pupil inside the school tests positive for the coronavirus? The final decision is likely to be quarantine the whole class for 14 days. It will then be the ASL to establish whether or not the pupils will be subjected to a swab and whether to extend the test to students of other classes.

In La Stampa of 26 July 2020 we read the following statement by Minister Azzolina:

“The model could be similar to the one used recently for state exams. All classmates would have to swab and the whole class would temporarily not show up at school. But these are measures that we are still writing with the trade unions and with the Scientific Technical Committee of the Ministry of Health. They will be part of a security protocol that we plan to close as soon as possible ".

In the event of multiple infections, however, therefore of a small outbreak, the ASL may decide to order the closure of the school, continuing the lessons with distance learning. But, considering that DAD is an option only for secondary school students, what will be done if the infection occurs in lower-level classes? The answer to this question is still unclear.

In case a teacher is positive

If a teacher is positive, all contacts with students or other teachers in the last 48 hours will be reconstructed in order to decide if and who to swab and who to quarantine.

If the teacher is not positive but has nevertheless had contact with a patient, home isolation is provided during which lessons will continue in DAD mode.

We will find out more details once the Safety Plan is approved.
