Even the doctors had not been able to heal her from the depths trough in which she had fallen following the serious illness that struck her. But her dog, Portos, did it, bringing her human friend back home smiling, a 10 year old girl hospitalized for some time in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (TIP) of Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome.
The little girl has a serious illness, post-infectious myelitis, a very rare reaction of the spinal cord, which causes a temporary form of tetraplegia. His condition and his long stay at the Romanol hospital had led to what doctors have defined as "profound post-traumatic depression".
However, it was the credit line that brought it back to the surface Portos, to which the team of pediatric resuscitators, pediatric neuropsychiatrists and hematologists of Gemelli, in agreement with the family, gave permission to visit the little girl who thus spent every day of the time with her four-legged friend.
The hope of the doctors was that the therapy with animals could, through the game, bring a smile back to the little girl's lips, helping her at the same time to regain the strength of mind to face the commitment of physiotherapy. So it was. The one brought to terms by Portos was the first case in Lazio of pet therapy in Pediatric Intensive Care, successfully carried out at the A. Gemelli Polyclinic.
After Baby Jesus, also Gemelli has started a therapy program thanks to the idea of the medical team directed by Professor Giorgio Conti.
Now the child has returned home healed.
