Il coffee Kopi Luwak it is produced from the berries partially digested and defecated by the palm civet, a small and shy nocturnal mammal. If you think this sounds unappetizing, wait until you hear how cruel this production actually is.

To make the most expensive coffee in the world, in fact, the animals are often caught in the wild and locked up in small sterile and filthy cages. They are deprived of everything essential to their well-being, including movement and a large natural environment. To confirm it is today an investigation by Peta, who managed to film the dire truth which hides behind the Kopi Luwak.

After the Guardian investigation, Undercover activists visited several farms located in villages in Indonesia and the Philippines, two of the world's leading producers of Kopi Luwak, advertised with a more than ever fake label as a "wild-source" product, that is, without captivity for animals. In reality, however, hundreds of civets are locked up in cages, are sick and exhibit neurotic behaviors typical of captivity, such as head swaying, a symptom of boredom and depression.

They are forced to follow a debilitating diet made only of coffee beans. The civet, on the other hand, is mainly frugivorous and nourishes of berries, fleshy fruit such as mango, pineapple, melon, bananas and fruits of native species of ficus, as well as rarely also of small birds, rodents and insects.

A breeder explained that civets are generally kept in a cage for at least three years before they are released into the wild and that the stress of childbirth and the lack of adequate nutrition cause them to lose their fur. Another confirms that their health deteriorates considerably during captivity, so much so that the animals do not survive after being released.

What to do? If you don't want to support such a cruel and dishonest industry - or drink something that essentially comes from poop - you don't have to buy Kopi Luwak coffee. And if you see a trader selling this repulsive product, you should try to explain to him how expensive coffee is really made and threaten him with a boycott.
