Home safety: how to keep children away from domestic accidents

The Ministry of Health has created the booklet Safe children at home, a small guide for parents on the home safety of the child

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

A knife that comes out of the drawer where the baby is rummaging with his hands, the edge of a window, the water on the fire. There home is not a 100% safe place for children and distractions and missed measures can also do the rest.

And not only that, sometimes we don't even realize that that little creature that was still and attached to the tit only yesterday is growing up and today it is already able to crawl and explore the world as instinct tells him. And from here on it's a constant riot of “staiattentoperpiacereeee!”.

This is why the Ministry of Health made the booklet Safe children at home, a small guide for parents on child home safety.

The first task? It is certainly that of the parents, who have a key role in make children understand the risks they can run and the potential dangers of lifestyles and behavior. But also grandparents and babysitters, kindergarten assistants and siblings: all adults must take an interest in this aspect which is easily overlooked or underestimated. In short, the advice is suitable for all those who have a child in custody.

Experts from the Ministry of Health suggest that the type of domestic accidents varies according to the age group, of the environment in which the child is, but also of the structure, implant or object with which they come into contact.

0 to six monthsfor example, the main risks for children are burns, falls, asphyxiation, drowning and car accidents. Beyond the small games that the baby could swallow, any stairs to be made inaccessible or low furniture from which to eliminate all junk (perhaps not the lamp that the mother-in-law gave you and which, oops!, Could fall to shatter into a thousand pieces . Oh well, but scerzo!), You know, don't you?, That the baby must never be left alone on the changing table or in the bath, that you must always check the temperature of the water before immersing it, the temperature of the food before feeding it and maybe not to use the pillow in the bed?

At 2-3 yearsinstead, the actual battles begin. While you think that your child is in the bedroom, you hear him busy in the bathroom instead, or you hear him on your heels while you drain the pasta. As the guide explains, it's time to use the corner protectors, fix the bookcases to the wall, lock the drawers, keep any ornaments out of the reach of the midgets.

Needless to say, it is it is absolutely forbidden to let them approach windows, balconies and terraces alone. Indeed, it is better to keep chairs or anything else on which you can climb away from the window sills: possibly also installed safety nets or raised railings. No, it is not a prison, but the puppets do not know the slightest sense of danger and are unconscious as Mother Nature made them.

Finally, among the 4 6-years the little one of the house is now independent: "The bicycle is fine, if used in the garden or in a closed park, but always with a helmet - the experts suggest - The child must be well explained the danger of indigestion linked to alcohol and foods that are dangerous for your metabolism ". The garden, the garage, the street or the swimming pool are just as many playgrounds, but adults should never be missing.

And for the rest? Teach them what can be dangerous, the "bua" can be a good deterrent, but do not fill them with anxieties and fears beyond measure. The baby certainly needs protection and safety around him, but exploring the world (with mum and dad watching) without excessive worries and with a few scratches at the end of the day will only make him a safer adult!
