Foie gras supporters have lost their war. The Supreme Court of the United States rejected the request to examine the appeal filed by producers and restaurateurs, who wanted to challenge the law passed in California that prohibited the sale of foie gras. It was the first ban of its kind in the US.

This decision was welcomed as one great victory for animal rights. The law, that only entered into force in 2012, has banned all food products created by the “forced feeding of birds for the purpose of fatten their liver beyond a normal size ".

But in 2013, a group of foie supporters of the terrifying French delight filed a motion to block the state's ability to enforce the ban. At the end of the legal path and after the appeals, now the United States Supreme Court has denied the request to review the judgment of the Ninth Court of Appeal, which in 2013 had confirmed the validity of the law.

Jonathan Lovvorn, Chief Advisor to the Humane Society of the United States, explains:

“The Supreme Court decision means that the people of California have the right to prohibit the sale of certain foods, also for the mere fact that they are the product of animal cruelty. The consequence of this case - that is, that states have the right to free their markets of cruel products - is a precedent of enormous consequences for millions of animals ”.

California, thankfully, isn't the only place against foie gras. Over twelve countries, including Germany, Israel, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Finland, have Force-feeding for the production of foie gras is prohibited. And many businesses and restaurants are doing the same.
