Dishes that once used instead of being thrown away can be planted like traditional seeds. It is the idea of Life Pack, the Colombian company that created Papelyco, a 100% biodegradable and compostable dish.

The war on plastics has long begun because we know that the future of our planet also depends on the choices we make every day. THE disposable dishes, even if they can be differentiated, they represent a huge waste, just think how little we use them before they become waste. And how many times are they abandoned on the street?

A nice environment-saving idea comes from this Colombian company that uses the slogan: Turn your plate into a beautiful plant. Papelyco offers an alternative and sustainable solution to disposable dishes that often end up in our seas killing marine animals.

These plates, but also trays and cutlery are made with corn seeds and pineapple husks, by-products of agricultural waste. The result is a product that reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The creators are Claudia Isabel Barona and Andres Benavides, their dishes are recyclable because they also contain seeds that allow them to be planted after use.

There are already many objects on the market that can be planted when we no longer need them, for example we find pencils, mugs, greeting cards, invitations, postcards and even children's books designed specifically to give birth to new trees by planting their cover.

This means that the dish will find a new life perhaps on the terrace or balcony, while for those who do not have a strong green thumb, there is always the possibility of disposing of it in the organic with the certainty that in just three weeks it decomposes completely.

Alongside the environmental aspect there is also the social one because behind the creation of these dishes, there is a large group of people in difficulty: single fathers and mothers, women at risk, former drug addicts and so on. The company was recognized by the United Nations for gender equality.

How to plant a pot

In addition to the pacts there are also many packaging that can be planted as cups and boxes. After use they can become tomatoes, herbs, strawberries or flowers. There are some precautions to follow: the dishes should not be placed in the microwave to avoid killing the seeds.

To plant it:

Once you're done with the dish, here's what to do:
Fill a vase with a first layer of earth;
Remove the first layer from the plate
Plant it and add some earth (no more than 3mm)
Water frequently but with little water, and expose to light and air
And voila in one to three weeks you will have a plant!
