Costa Rica powered only by renewables for more than 150 days

Enchanting beaches, unspoiled nature and low, indeed very low emissions: we are in Costa Rica where, from the beginning of 2016 to today, the electricity grid has been powered for 150 days exclusively by a mix of renewable sources. This was announced by ICE, the energy supplier of the Central American state.

Enchanting beaches, unspoiled and low nature, indeed very low emissions: we are in Costa Rica where, from the beginning of 2016 to today, the electricity grid has been powered for 150 days exclusively by a mix of renewable sources. This was announced by ICE, the energy supplier of the Central American state.

A remarkable result, which confirms the will of the small Central American republic to arrive at use only clean energy sources by 2021.

Much of this record was recorded during the summer: per 76 consecutive daysin fact, from June 16 to September 2, the Costa Rican network was powered by a mix of hydroelectric, Aeolian, solar e geothermal.

In particular, according to the report released by ICE, hydroelectricity contributed more than 80% to the result, followed by geothermal (12,6%), wind (7,1%) and solar (0,01%).

"We are a small country with big goals." - wrote the ICE on his Facebook profile - "We continue to strive to reach the goal of zero impact by 2021. We have set ourselves great goals and we have achieved them, we are an example for the world!"

Costa Rica powered only by renewables for more than 150 days

It is not the first time that Costa Rica stands out for the results achieved in the field of renewables: even last year, the small Central American nation managed to reach the goal of very long periods with zero emissions, fueling itself almost 99% with renewable sun.

Thanks to legislation and a policy that is attentive to environmental issues, also favored by the small size of the state territory (just over 50 thousand sq km), by its limited number of inhabitants (just under 5 million) and by the enormous wealth of resources natural, in particular water. And precisely hydroelectricity is the main source of energy in the country: a renewable source, yes, but rather controversial, as it requires extremely invasive infrastructures which, according to some observers, cannot be considered truly "clean" or "zero emissions" .

Having made this clarification, it is however evident how Costa Rica - which just a few years ago obtained the title of "happiest nation in the world" - offers a concrete example of how it is possible to implement policies in favor of the environment and renewables, pursuing sustainable development. The 150 days passed without burning fossil sources are a clear testimony.
