Babies should not sleep on breastfeeding pillows, 7 babies died due to incorrect use of the Boppy pillow in the US

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

Boppy is the brand of a well-known nursing pillow also sold in our country. In the US, however, there is a very serious fact concerning this device: an incorrect use would have caused the death of 7 newborns.

The nursing pillow is a very practical and useful object for new parents (we have also recommended it to you among the products that should never be missing in a green birth list) but it is extremely important to use it correctly to avoid risks.

According to a new analysis conducted by Consumer Reports from US government data, misuse of the Boppy Breastfeeding Pillow can pose serious risks to babies and has led to the deaths of 7 of them.

    Consumer Reports scrive:

It happens nearly a year after the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the federal agency that oversees thousands of household items, warned health care workers never to let babies sleep on mattresses, which are meant to sit or lay down. babies while awake, or on breastfeeding pillows that are meant to facilitate breastfeeding. The risk is that when children are left unattended or sleep on these products they can tip over or their head can fall in such a way that they block their airways and lead to suffocation.

When the CPSC warned of the risks (October 2020), Consumer Reports had investigated and discovered at least 28 infant deaths (from 2012 to 2018) related to the misuse of breastfeeding pillows and baby cots made by various companies, including also Boppy.

Since then, sadly, there have been seven other infant deaths and one injury reported via the public database, all linked to Boppy-branded breastfeeding pillows, misused by parents to make babies sleep. The problem in these cases arose when the children moved by rolling in the soft fabric with which the cushions are made, unable to breathe.

Consumer Reports points out, however, that, in many cases, there were other factors that could have contributed to the death, such as a blanket placed over the baby.

Boppy responded, at the request of Consumer Reports, via its VP of Marketing Amy St. Germain:

to find a solution that helps make children safer. Currently, we are awaiting more information from the CPSC as we continue our dialogue. Of course, even the death of a child is too much and we are devastated to hear about these tragedies. For a long time we have been providing clear and unambiguous warnings and instructions for safe use on all products. We have always stressed that our products are for waking only. And, as clearly stated on all products, packaging and promotional materials, infants should not be left unattended or allowed to sleep on or with any Boppy product. Despite these measures, our product has been used for children's sleep in adult beds, sofas, cribs, contrary to our warnings, AAP guidelines and CPSC's Oct 7, 2020 warning.

It is therefore important to remember that, if the baby falls asleep on the pillow while breastfeeding, it is always good to move him to a solid surface to allow him to rest safely.
