Amatrice earthquake: how children live a month later from the tragedy?

If he asks Telefono Azzurro, which in recent days has released a video (you see it below) entitled "Back to Normal”, In which the lives of Marco and Giorgio, two 10-year-old peers, are compared.

Their differences? One now lives in one tent city with all the constraints it entails, the other, Giorgio, no. The Telefono Azzurro video reports some episodes of their daily life, when even brushing your teeth - in Amatrice - with a bottle of water can be hard. And the goal is only one: help return to normal.

Yes, because the trauma of the earthquake is present and will continue to be so for a long time among the children and adolescents of this town. The trauma of one's destroyed home, of many, too many, griefs in the family, of parents who feel lost.

This is why with "Back to Normal" Telefono Azzurro wants to be of support to children, adolescents and even parents regarding the right way to process what is happening. But there is one thing that children, especially those between 4 and 6 years old, have great: believing that somehow we can go back, that even death is a reversible event. A form of normal rework, say the psychologists of the association, which indeed has the wonderful power of helping parents, weak adults, to communicate and respond with determination.

In short, after a month of severe suffering, now the imperative is "Return to normal".

#BackToNormal is also a hashtag that Telefono Azzurro has launched on the web together with video (first of three): take back your daily life, not easy if you no longer even have a home. But it must be done, starting from them, from children and adolescents, from play and from school.

This is why the Telefono Azzurro Emergency Team also accompanied the students of Amatrice and other countries affected by the earthquake during the back to school and will do so for the rest of the school year. A support that will also be there on the occasion of extracurricular activities, because a Long-term psychological support is important. So that they are never left alone.

As Save The Children also recalls, children have a great ability to deal with traumatic events and to react positively to the difficulties that an emergency situation inevitably entails. Despite this, it is necessary that they are adequately protected to allow them to overcome these events: their protection and protection depends on the attitude and reactions that parents tend to implement. In particular, we advise parents to take care of themselves and not to underestimate their moods and to resort to psychological help in case they feel the need: children replicate the behaviors of their parents and react better when these are safe and calm.
