He waited to hug his little sister on the way, trying to resist the ugly tumor that he had decided to take away when he was only 9 years old. It is the story of Bailey, a brave child who struggled with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

This uncommon form of cancer affects the cells of the immune system. By the time he was diagnosed, the disease was already in the third stage. It all started in the summer of 2016, when Bailey began to feel unwell. In September, after an initial check-up in the hospital, he was diagnosed with a viral infection but soon the doctors realized that it was something more serious. From there to the discovery of Lymphoma it was a short step.

The doctors treating him only gave him "days or weeks" as the cancer had already spread throughout his body. Despite the treatments and numerous improvements that had generated new hope in the family, the cancer returned.

Bailey fought a courageous 15-month battle with cancer. The baby was very fond of his younger brother Riley and was looking forward to meeting his little sister whose birth was scheduled for November 2017.

"He knew he wasn't going to be here for Christmas, but we tried to get him to put together a gift list," he said Riley's mom, Rachel. “Most of the things she asked for were items she would never play with. They were more suited to the little brother ”continues the father. "He had chosen everything for Riley because he knew he would never use them."

The boy wanted so much to know his little sister Millie, whose name he had also chosen, but the doctors had given little hope to the family. However, Bailey believed it until the end and in November he managed to hug her:

“I want to stay but it's time to go, to become his guardian angel”.

Says Mom: “We didn't think he would survive that long, but he was determined to meet Millie. He arrived in late November, and Millie was born. He hugged her and did everything an older brother would have done with her, change her, wash her, sing for her ”.

On Friday, December 22, Bailey was taken by ambulance to the hospital. On Christmas Eve he took his last breath as a single tear came out of his eyes, his parents tell.

A truly courageous child, who until the end fought against the disease while also supporting his family: “Take care of Riley and Millie. I only give you 20 minutes to cry ”.

Until the end he gave smiles to those around him, making grimaces and funny faces. He also thought about his funeral, where sadness was to be banished. And his wish was granted.
