Smog and autism. Breathe il nitrogen dioxide and fine during the period of pregnancy, and in the first year of the baby's life, aincreases the risk of autism in the child.

To reveal it is one study conducted by a group of researchers from University of Southern California, coordinated by the teacher Heather Volk, and published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

According to the researchers, excessive exposure to pollution - and in particular to harmful substances such as nitrogen dioxide and fine particles, the infamous and feared Pm10 e Pm2.5 - would represent a strong risk for the unborn and newborn children.

Scholars have come to establish one close correlation between air quality and urban smog (mainly resulting from car pollution) and the spread of autism after analyzing a sample of 279 autistic children, compared with another group of 245 healthy children.

From the monitoring and comparison of the two groups, the doctors deduced that i children living in the most polluted areas had three times the chance to get sick with autism compared to children living in areas less prone to smog.

"Exposure to traffic-related air pollution was associated by our results with an increased risk of autism - explained the research coordinator - These effects were observed by measuring air pollution in correlation with the areas of residence of the children involved. in the studio. The results suggest the need to deepen the understanding of the effects of pollution on human health and in particular on the development of autistic disorder ".

Once again theair pollution confirms itself as one real lethal weapon, capable of triggering incurable diseases not only among adults but also among children, so as to determine their fate even before they are born!

And the question comes back on time: but with a policy of eco-sustainable urban transport and green policies, how much money could the national health system save? And how many people could be saved from illness or death?
