Nothing alcohol for future dads (and not just for future mothers and pregnant women): it could hinder the proper development of the baby. If you want to become a dad as soon as possible, the advice is to give up alcoholic beverages for a while. It is the confirmation that the future father is as important as the mother for the health of the unborn child.

The news comes from a study conducted byIbcn-Cnr in collaboration with the Algological Reference Center of the Lazio Region. The study reveals for the first time that alcohol affects the DNA starting from negative consequences on the development of the child's nervous system. Also, the future born could be more likely to consume alcohol as an adult.

The study in question was published in the journal Addiction Biology. Expert advice for future dads? Healthy eating, physical activity and above all no smoking and no alcohol. These are basic rules that are usually communicated to expectant mothers but which now also apply to would-be fathers.

In fact, even fathers' habits regarding alcohol consumption can affect the outcome of pregnancy and the health of the fetus.

"According to the data of our experiment, prenatal paternal exposure to alcohol is able to influence the development of the young and in particular the correct functioning of the cells of the central nervous system" - has explained Marco Fiore, researcher of the IBCN-Cnr and coordinator of the study together with his colleague from the Institute Roberto Coccurello.

In particular, alcohol would affect the Ngf factor, discovered by Rita Levi Montalcini more than fifty years ago and which earned her the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1986, a key element for the survival and functionality of various neuronal and non-neuronal cell populations, and on the Bdnf, mainly involved in cerebral pathophysiology. These two factors together constitute key indicators of the harm induced by alcohol intoxication.

The most serious problems are likely to arise when the father is an alcoholic. And how does the transition from alcoholic father to son take place? Experts explained that alcohol influences the paternal DNA directly through mutations, or indirectly through epigenetic mechanisms, which are still under study.

According to the study results, paternal exposure to alcohol would be able to induce in children aa increased sensitivity to the gratifying effects of alcohol, which could lead to a greater risk of abuse of this substance in adult life.

In future research, the experts will investigate the phenomena that lead to these mechanisms. Already now they advise men and especially future fathers of limit alcohol consumption as much as possible in anticipation of pregnancy.
