some researchers swear that According to some, there is a relationship between how a baby is breastfeeding and how he will use one hand rather than the other.

Strange but true: according to some researchers there is a relationship between the time a baby has breastfed and the time in which, once autonomous, he will use one hand rather than the other

Breastfeeding time can affect a baby's growth far more than you think. About 90% of people are right-handed and about 10% are left-handed, but why do some of us become left-handed and others not? The time a baby is allowed to suckle milk could make a difference.

That's right: a new study has attempted to shed light on this "mystery" by linking hand preference to the fact that babies are breastfed or bottle fed, but most importantly, to the time dedicated to natural breastfeeding.

Well, the research, conducted at the University of Washington in Seattle, found that bottle-fed babies are more likely to be left-handed. Conversely, the longer you breastfeed, the less chance your baby will become left-handed or ambidextrous.

Led by Philippe P. Hujoel of the School of Dentistry, the researchers framed data from seven surveys in five different countries and found a surprising result: in over 60 mother-child pairs, there was a clear association between breastfeeding time and hand use.

In particular, compared to the bottle, breastfeeding for less than a month had reduced the possibility that the baby would later be left-handed or ambidextrous by 9%; breastfeeding for one to six months, on the other hand, decreased the likelihood that the baby would later be left-handed or ambidextrous by 15%; while the strongest effect was found when mothers breast-fed for more than six months. In this group, the chance of the child later becoming left-handed or ambidextrous decreased by up to 22%.

"We believe that breastfeeding optimizes the process that the brain undergoes when the hands take shape," said Philippe Hujoel, author of the study. This is important because it provides an independent line of evidence that breastfeeding should last six to nine months. "

What the authors point out, however, is that breastfeeding does not necessarily lead to dexterity, only that this type of nourishment could optimize a process called lateralization of the brain. Which doesn't mean that those who are bottle-fed don't have it! In any case, hand preference is set practically at the beginning of fetal life and is determined at least in part by genetics, the researchers comment.

If, therefore, prefer breastfeeding, when possible and in optimal conditions, remains one of the healthiest choices to make for your baby, even when the bottle is necessary and should be welcome too! As long as the mother is calm and happy, left-handed child or not!
