Are washable nappies really that eco-friendly?

Are washable nappies really that eco-friendly?

According to the UK Department of the Environment, there is no difference between disposable and washable nappies at the environmental level.

Disposable diaper o washable? If the criterion is the environmental one, contrary to what has always been thought, little changes. According to British Department of the Environment, neither is healthy for the environment. According to the research carried out by the English department, in fact, the use of disposable diapers for 2 and a half years for a single child would cause on average 550 kg di CO2 emissions, while for washable ones they are equal to 570 kg.

In fact, in the first 3 years of life, a child needs 4.500-5.000 diapers if we consider on average 6 changes per day up to the first year of life, 5 changes up to the second year and 3 up to the third year, equal to two tons of non-recyclable waste.

In terms of Co2, the budget would be, according to the ministry, "practically identical". Marcello Somma, director of sustainable development in Matter in this regard he explained to ADN Kronos: “While with disposable we have a problem linked to the end of life of the product, with washable the 'environmental cost' concerns the energy and water used during the life cycle of the product“. As for disposables, adds Somma, “the problem regarding the end of life of the product exists and cannot be ignored. For this reason, as market leader, we are committed within the next 5 years, not to send our products to landfills “.

This is what emerges from the survey. But despite the research results, we still feel compelled to take a stand in favor of washable nappies and this for various reasons. there are several reasons. If from the point of view of emissions, there would be no difference in how much those saved during their disposal for washable nappies would be consumed precisely for washing them, however, we must consider that, as has been shown by the statistics, ecological nappies accelerate the transition to potty, since avoiding the unnatural feeling of dryness, they favor the abandonment of the diaper as early as a year, a year and a half. This means that the two and a half years estimated by the ministry would be drastically reduced by using them, instead of the disposable one.

Furthermore, the economic factor should not be underestimated.

But what do the moms? We await feedback from those directly interested
