After years of research, after millions of mice and rats were sacrificed in the name of alleged scientific progress, after hundreds of thousands of patients were given drugs made and tested based on this animal model, the team of scientists reveals that to study an inflammatory response, the best research is that conducted on human physiology.
"We are not saying not to use animal models, but we must recognize that simple model systems do not reproduce complex human disease," is quick to specify Ronald Tompkins, professor at Harvard Medical School and co-author of the study, which was born from a project designed to systematically study the genetic responses resulting from certain acute inflammatory stimuli in humans.
