80% of the countries of the world still allow animal testing of cosmetics. This is why the European Union is launching a challenge to the worldwide ban on animal testing on cosmetics before 2023. As we know, however, member countries have been obliged to use cruelty free products since 2013.

The European cosmetics industry has not suffered a decline and has continued to keep two million jobs active even after the ban on animal testing, MEPs say.

We are talking about pharmaceutical products, detergents and much more that is legally placed on the extra-European market, for this reason we are working so that through diplomatic networks we can build coalitions and conventions within the United Nations and slowly at a global level.

The resolution that goes in this direction was approved unanimously with 63 votes in favor and 1 abstention, but will be put to the vote in the March plenary session of Parliament, in Strasbourg.

The scenario seems to be that of change and today public opinion is more attentive to animals and the environment. According to the Special Eurobarometer Survey, 89% of EU citizens are convinced that the union must be the spokesperson for greater awareness, while 90% are convinced that animal welfare standards must be established all over the world.

In the Union, as we said, the turning point has already been with the entry into force of the European directive 2003/15 / EC: all the substances used to package creams, shampoos and perfumes must be strictly "cruelty free", not only the finished products, but also raw materials. However, there remains a lack of reliable data on animal experiments on cosmetics imported into the EU. The EU should ensure that no products placed on its market have been tested on animals in a third country. Which still does not happen today.
