Why is chocolate poisonous to your dog (and not us)? The problem lies in a toxic substance it contains.
He is about to end up run over, his mother saves himIs chocolate harmless? For us humans the answer is yes even if, to tell the truth, continually eating excessive quantities of it can cause obesity and tooth decay. For dogs, on the other hand, it is a completely different story.
Cocoa comes from the roasted seeds of the cocoa plant which includes some toxic components, theobromine and caffeine. It is difficult for humans to reach the lethal dose of theobromine, and thus die of poisoning, because one would have to eat chocolate as if there was no tomorrow.
But things change in the case of dogs because, for them, theobromine can be very lethal even in moderate amounts. 100 grams of dark chocolate would be enough to kill a 10 kg dog.
Symptoms, in case of poisoning, can begin within 2 hours of ingestion but it can take much longer, up to 24, for them to appear. And this is because dogs metabolize chocolate slowly. In short, absolutely better to avoid!
