Having a functioning and efficient heating system is essential to face the harsh temperatures of these days. But what to do if we notice that our radiator is leaking water?

We know that radiators are filled with water inside which, as it heats up thanks to the action of the boiler, it also ends up heating the air in the house. Therefore, it should not be scary if our heaters have a leak: in most cases it is a small inconvenience that can be solved with household means, without requiring the intervention of a technician. Before proceeding with any interventions, however, it is important to identify where the leak comes from: it could be near the manual shut-off valve, the crack in the pipe (or plug), or near the vent valve.

If the loss comes from the shut-off valve, you can try to tighten it better with the help of a "parrot" wrench or you can opt for the replacement of the entire valve, which can be purchased in hardware stores for a few euros. A localized loss in front of the vent valve, on the other hand, it is the demonstration of the fact that there is too high a level of water in the radiator: if this is the case, just lower this level, making the valve "bleed" a little before closing it again. If this trick does not stop the leak, the valve will also be replaced in this case.

The loss that comes from the clique, on the other hand, it indicates wear of the metal or even a failure inside the radiator: in this case it is advisable to make use of the expertise of a specialized technician, who could proceed with welding the crack at the breaking point or, in an extreme case, with the replacement of the entire radiator. Finally, in case of water leakage from the shut-off valve of the radiator, simply loosen the fixing screw of the knob with the screwdriver and replace, also in this case, the gasket or the entire valve (it is important to underline that, to replace the sealing valve, it is necessary to empty the whole system).

We always remember that it is essential act with the radiators turned off and cold to avoid the risk of getting hurt; It is also important to switch off the boiler as well, if possible, and place a basin under the leak to catch the water. It must also be said that if you do not feel up to the task of carrying out radiator repairs yourself, it is better to contact a competent person who can help us.
