And do you know the numerous benefits of installing a hedge instead of the traditional wooden fence or wall?

There are a thousand ways we can contribute to improving the health of the environment - from clothing to what we put on our plate, from using public transport instead of private cars to using renewable energy resources.

But even our home and garden can become greener: for example, replacing the garden fence with a hedge could bring many benefits in terms of rainwater control and wildlife protection - even if we live in the city.

The initiative was launched by the Royal Horticultural Society, an English association that deals with gardening: together with the replacement of fences and fences with green flower beds and hedges, it has started a study to investigate which are the most resilient plant species and more suitable for countering the effects of the climate crisis and pollution in our cities.

An ad hoc team was tasked with examining the “Functioning” and the properties of the different types of hedges, examining their ecosystem services, to develop the ideal combination of plants that demonstrate the greatest resilience to rain and bad weather.

Hedges can make a significant contribution to reducing pollution and improving air quality, but also to contain the flow of rainwater (thus limiting the damage of any floods or extreme storms). Furthermore, among the plants of the hedge small wild animals can find shelter and shade on the sunniest days.

In short, the hedge, however humble, leads to those who take care of it (and not only) many benefits - including inexpensive and relatively easy maintenance. Fully understanding which are the best combinations of plants to obtain the maximum environmental benefits, as well as adopting strategies to take care of them in the best way, could guarantee greater livability in our cities, which are promising to be increasingly hot and polluted.

According to the study, the perfect hedge is not a monoculture (as is often seen in our cities, perhaps for aesthetic reasons), but rather by an alternation of different plants, each with its own peculiarities: the best effects were recorded thanks to the contribution of beech, privet and holly plants.

The project will focus on observing plants for a whole year, within different urban contexts and in the presence of varied meteorological phenomena. Six combinations of hedges will be tested, born from the coexistence of four different plants: privet, western red cedar, hawthorn and elaeagnus.
