Unusable masks supplied at school? Ingenious ideas not to throw them away

The masks provided in school according to many parents are practically unusable. Here are some ingenious ideas for reusing them.

Already last year the masks provided at school had aroused a lot of indignation among parents. Uncomfortable, annoying, too narrow or on the contrary too big. Many children also complained of the bad smell. And so many of these personal protective equipment remained unused.

To avoid throwing them in the trash or piling them up unnecessarily, parents came up with some ingenious recycling ideas. For example, removing the rubber bands and using them as a filter to insert into the washable ones. Others have recycled them to create alternative beauty-cases or dust-trapping cloths.

Since masks of the same type have already been distributed in some schools this year, let's at least try to recover them. Here are a few ideas from which to draw inspiration.

Beauty-case with mask

"Just a little imagination" on his youtube channel he explains how to reuse school masks to create a DIY vanity case.

Cut the rubber bands, open the mask following the seam, turn the edge on itself, fold it and add the hot glue between the two ends to glue them to each other.

The same operation must be repeated on the other side, as explained in the video tutorial. At this point you will have a sachet in your hands.

Add the elastics to form a handbag and glue a piece of Velcro between one side and the other, so that it can be closed and opened easily.

DIY dust catcher with mask

Many parents have tried to recycle school masks to make them dust-catching cloths. And apparently this is the most popular idea of recycling.

There are those who simply fix the masks using the rubber bands on the Swiffer broom to dust on the ground. And who, after removing the rubber bands, uses them to dust furniture and so on.

Ideas to make school masks more comfortable

"La Tertulia" on his youtube channel explains how to make a school mask more comfortable and less tight.

You have to thin the rubber bands with scissors, cut them in the center and join the two parts of each with a simple lighter, as the video explains.

In this way the elastics can pass around the ears, as in the normal surgical masks.

Donate unusable school masks

Alternatively it is possible donate the masks to voluntary organizations and associations. For example, the Castelli Romani food and wine association, in collaboration with the Community of Sant'Egidio, has launched a campaign to collect unused school masks to avoid waste.
