The Trump administration wants to revoke the protection of gray wolves in the United States by the end of 2020. Animal rights activists protest: if the plan goes through, the wolf could return to the list at risk of extinction in the 48 states. The announcement comes from Aurelia Skipwith, director of the US Fish and Wildlife Service who explained:

"We are working hard to be able to do it by the end of the year, I would say it is imminent".

The wolves, therefore, could go back to being hunted. But they would not be the only ones because even for migratory birds, the Trump administration is waging a battle for the reduction of protections. Already last year, the Fish and Wildlife Service proposed removing the gray wolf from protection by exempting a small population of Mexican wolves in the southwest.

Hunted, trapped and poisoned, gray wolves currently live in the Great Lakes region and north of the United States. Their populations have declined in recent years, now numbering 6, but they are no longer endangered in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and parts of Oregon, Utah and Washington state. Federal protections remain in the other states.

According to Skipwith, the wolf has now "recovered biologically" and its removal from the list demonstrates the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act. The Humane Society of the United States and other wildlife protection groups argue that wolves are still vulnerable animals. The abandonment of the protections through the Lower 48 would condemn any possibility of spreading to other states.

"We just want to make sure we protect other species as well," Skipwith said. “When you get involved in a lawsuit, after it has been so successful, you are stealing resources from the species that need them most. In any case, we do not foresee that the gray wolf will expand further, regardless of federal protection ”.
