European children, too often unwitting victims of defective and dangerous toys, will now be safer thanks to the entry into force of new EU rules for toys that "meet the highest safety standards in the world". The new legal framework will replace the old and outdated 1988 directive on toy safety.

No more carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic substances. Phthalates, dolls made with flammable paints, the changing tables and high chairs that are not sufficiently stable, parts and fragments of toys that can be ingested by children, including toys and games mixed with food without adequate protective wrapping. But also more checks, both at the external borders of the EU and internally, and transparency, with theobligation for manufacturers to ensure the traceability of the toy, indicating the name, address and number of the manufacturer and identifying the possible dangers through a safety assessment of the toy.

“Safety for our children is our top priority. We have the best toy laws in the world and the highest safety standards. But tightening the rules is not enough: it is necessary that the Member States ensure greater surveillance of the market, discouraging fraudulent market operators "explains the Vice-President of the European Commission Antonio Tajani, responsible for industry and entrepreneurship.

The European Commission has also compiled a guide with advice on how to protect your children from the risks associated with toys.

The EU therefore recalls that playing is every child's right, but it must also be safe: making sure that this happens is up to us adults.

Here are some tips to give your children safe toys made with natural materials, such as organic cotton, fabric and wood. And always with an eye to the environment.
