"These chewing gum balls can suffocate children." Mom launches petition after her daughter dies

In France, a little girl suffocated by spherical candies died and her mother decided to launch a petition.

Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerous

They are of a thousand colors, sugary and with a chewing gum heart: they have been tempting children for decades, but any parent has always considered them dangerous. They are the “magic balls”, small sphere candies made up of several layers of sugar that surround a piece of chewing gum. A suffocated girl died in France and her mother decided to launch a petition to make these sweets safer.

The characteristic of these colored balls (there are thousands of them, for example, in automatic candy dispensers in the corners of bars for a few cents), is in fact that of being small (about 2,2 cm) and with a particularly hard wrapping. : difficult, if not impossible, to bite. It should be melted in your mouth before you get to chewing gum.

As reported by the French consumer site 60millions, 12-year-old Celia was suffocated by one of these magical balls last summer.

So, to make sure that this candy doesn't make another victim, the mother has launched a petition.

You are Angélique Cortot and she does not ask for the magic ball to be withdrawn from the market, but she urges the manufacturer (Babo France) to change shape so that air can pass if the ball gets stuck in a child's windpipe.

“This ball measures 2,2 cm in diameter - writes Angélique in the text of the petition - it can be red or blue but it is also dangerous! In fact, the sale of this ball was withdrawn in 1993 and put back on the market in 1997 without any improvement. Six years ago, a petition had already been posted on Change.org to warn of the danger and call for a ban. My husband and I do not want to ban the sale of these magical spheres ”.

With this petition (which already has more than 32 thousand signatures) they are asking for preventive measures, such as:

    • an age limit printed in large letters on the package with a precision on the danger
    • the reduction of the diameter of the ball to less than 1,8 cm (a child's windpipe is 1,8 cm in diameter) or the creation of a hole in the center of the ball so that in the event of suffocation the air can pass and the baby can breathe

“With this petition, I would like to warn other parents of the danger of this magic ball. In a few seconds your life can change as ours has changed ”.

    Babo France's opinion

“We have no news of any other incidents with this product, which cannot be held responsible for the deaths of 127 children per year,” he tells 60millions Brabo France, contrary to what was initially erroneously stated by the petition.

Widely reported in the press, this figure was indeed incorrect and has since been removed from the text.

The magic spheres, says Brabo France, "meet all legal standards and do not present particular dangers compared to the various other confectionery products on the market".

But every adult who has attended a course to learn the main maneuvers for clearing the airways knows that precisely round, cylindrical, ovoid objects, such as balls and spheres are the most dangerous ...
