The UN warns the world: we have less than 11 years to save the Earth's biodiversity. Protected areas are urgently needed

According to the UN, by 2030 at least 30% of terrestrial and marine environments will have to be declared protected areas to protect the environment

To ensure the vitality of ecosystems and human health, at least the 30% of the earth's surface it should be transformed into protected areas by 2030.

Underlining the urgent need to protect nature and stop environmental degradation is the UN, through the "zero draft text of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework", a draft to be discussed by the representatives of the approximately 200 countries that will meet next October in Kunming, China, on the occasion of the biodiversity summit

It is not the first time that the United Nations has warned of the importance of safeguarding and restoring ecosystems, but the need for concrete actions has never been as urgent as today: last year a report on the state of ecosystems, also drawn up by the UN , he revealed that well one million animal and plant species are at risk of extinction.

The responsibility lies above all with us human beings and with our activities that continually threaten animals and plants and, if we do not do something immediately, the situation will turn against us. By 2050, Africa is expected to lose 50% of its birds and mammals and for fisheries in Asia to completely collapse. The loss of plants and marine life will reduce the Earth's ability to absorb carbon, creating a vicious circle.

For this reason, the UN has proposed to declare a protected area at least one third of the land and sea areas: of this, about 10% should be under strict protection.

The plan also includes solutions for tackling the climate crisis in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, including reforestation and soil restoration projects, as well as reducing the spread of invasive species and pollution caused by pesticides and plastics.

It is a ambitious proposal, welcomed by scientists and environmentalists, who however fear there is no political will to implement what is proposed.

To date, in fact, the objectives identified by the United Nations for safeguard or restore ecosystems they were never reached, precisely because of a lack of political support.

If the willingness to implement programs in order to face the environmental and climate crisis in progress, in a short time we will be forced to pay disastrous consequences, also linked to the loss of biodiversity.
