The young patients of the pediatric Oncohematology department of the Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Polyclinic in Bologna will have their own nursery. A space in which to play and have fun despite treatment and hospitalization.

Children, in hospital due to blood cancers, often spend a lot of time away from home, away from their habits. For this reason, the idea of creating a space suitable for them, in the name of play and socialization, can be of great help.

The nursery was inaugurated in recent days and was designed to respond to the educational and socialization needs of hospitalized children. The age group is up to 36 months, a very delicate period because in this phase the child acquires important skills and abilities on all levels, from the motor to the cognitive and affective-relational one.

Unfortunately, illness, heavy treatment and long hospitalization hinder and often interrupt this process, causing social and psychological isolation in children.

"To allow children to continue their educational path even within the hospital, the service is managed by specialized and qualified educators - on the basis of specific educational projects - and is carried out in compliance with the indications received from health personnel" it is read in the official press release.

Sant'Orsola is not the first hospital to host similar initiatives. In recent months, other projects have been launched at Regina Margherita in Turin, at Santobono Pausilipon in Naples, at San Gerardo in Monza and at the Padua Hospital. And the results have been positive: since the start, all children in long-term care in partner hospitals have enrolled in the nursery service, with important results. The little ones indeed showed a remarkable psychological and behavioral recoveryand bridging the gap due to hospital stay.

Families also benefit. The nursery helps them and the children to better cope with the impact of the disease.

A small glimmer of normality within the unfortunately difficult life of these children, put to the test by the disease.
