Remember the mouflons ofGiglio Island? Their fate now seemed sealed: their fate was the killing, authorized by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park Authority. And so it was for several examples. Fortunately, however, not for everyone. Thanks to the mobilization of the WWF and LAV (Anti Vivisection League) associations, some mouflons were rescued. And after being taken from the park they were transported to the Semproniano Wildlife Recovery Center, to other animal shelters and to areas made available by the Forest Police.

Here they will be able to live in freedom and leave behind the fear of being shot at any moment and their care will be entrusted to experts.

Certainly the issue of controlling the species identified as alien involves different visions and sensitivities. In this case, thanks also to the availability of the Park and the rules that provide for the opportunity to consider non-lethal methods in the case of eradication for conservation purposes - explain the LAV and WWF - we have accepted to take charge of the maintenance of the animals. captured and moved by the park to our selected structures or made available by other associations and the Forestry Police to ensure their survival in the best possible conditions. We believe what has been decided is a good practice that demonstrates how it is possible to find mediation points even if starting from different settings.

The controversial story of the mouflons

Mouflon eradication operations were authorized last year by the Tuscan Archipelago National Park Authority. A real massacre that is part of a project financed by the European Union (for a good 1,6 million euros) which aims to protect biodiversity on the Giglio Island.

The mouflon is not a native species, but was introduced for hunting purposes on the island of Tuscany around the 50s. It is in fact one species considered alien and invasive, which jeopardizes the survival of other animals and causes damage to the ecosystem.

Upon learning of the news relating to the killing of these mammals, the animal welfare associations immediately mobilized to propose a non-cruel alternative and save the mouflons. After several appeals and strong pressure, last November the director of the Park has the Tuscan Archipelago National Park agreed to convene a discussion table with LAV and WWF and so an agreement was reached that provides for the suspension of the killing and the transfer of mouflons at various shelters.

The general command of the Forestry Carabinieri takes care of the transport of the animals. The mouflon transfer operations have just started, but will continue in the coming weeks. A happy ending for mouflons, but also a story that confirms that there are effective and not cruel alternatives to killing (which too often are described as the only viable solution).
