A shot that breaks the heart and shows the photo of a child who after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, in 1945, he carries his dead brother on his shoulder, tied behind his back, awaiting cremation.

A photo that dates back to that time, taken from the lens of Joe O’Donnell, American journalist and photographer who worked for the United States Information Agency as a correspondent in Japan, to document the effects of the two atomic bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

A crude image that Pope Francis has distributed in recent days to journalists on the flight to Santiago de Chile, as a testimony of the 'fruit of the war' and a warning against other conflicts.

That of the atomic bomb was a page in history to forget, O'Donnell had also tried that once back in America, he had tried to erase the horror from his mind. But the world had to know what had happened, starting from the story of this child.

In 1995, in an interview with the Japanese broadcaster NHK TV, the American photographer felt obliged to apologize to the Japanese people and to all the victims of the bombings.

Barefoot, motionless and empty of feelings, the child waits to greet his little brother for the last time.
