How to use 150 thousand plastic bottles? By building your own island! Richart Sowa did it in Mexico

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

How to use 150 thousand plastic bottles? By building your own island! The did Richart Sowa, an artist, an environmentalist and a former carpenter who has assembled a mass of garbage and recycled artificial materials, collected in almost seven years, to build his own island in Mexico.

It is located in the waters of Isla Mujeres, on the Caribbean coast of Mexico and was born between the end of 2007 and 2008. According to Green Travel Life, Joyxee Island is the second artificial island of Sowa, which built its first plastic island in 1998, near Puerto Aventuras, Cancun. But this was destroyed by Hurricane Emily in 2005.

Sowa did not give up. He collected some bags inside as well 150.000 plastic bottles and attached them to the old wooden pallets, before throwing them into the water. He then put sand and earth on top, somehow managing to provide a foundation for trees and other plants present on the island. Like ginger, agave and hibiscus flowers. Or like mangroves, whose growing roots wind their way through the web of bottle sacks, helping to keep everything tied together.

The artist collects rainwater for his sink and uses solar panels for cooking. Her human waste then becomes manure.

“Why should I buy it if I already have it?”, Explains the man, who, for those who want to visit him, is a very welcoming and kind host. He explains to all visitors everything about the island and the house. Try it for yourself ...
