Bella, an 11-year-old female German shepherd, is a story of struggle for survival and redemption. About a year ago her owners tied her to a rock and threw her in Trent River, in England. Luckily, though, a passerby named Jane Harper noticed her tossing in the water and jumped into the river to save her. Now, after 15 months of rehabilitation at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), Bella was adopted by a retired couple living in South Derbyshire.

The two, Maggie Mellish and Charlie Douglas, had learned of the story of his sad affair thanks to a televised appeal.

Bella's former owner Charlene Latham was sentenced last month to 12 months of social services and forced to pay a hefty fine for trying to drown her pet. For three years the woman will no longer be able to keep dogs or other animals.

The retired couple is perfectly aware that Bella will need regular care and visits to the vet after the torture she has endured, but this does not discourage them and they are ready to give her all the affection she needs.

    Happy second life, Bella!
