Dogs aren't just man's best friend. In many cases they turn out to be true heroes, as evidenced by some thrilling rescue stories like that of Brian Myers, a 59-year-old man from New Jersey who was rescued by his faithful dog Sadie. On January 16 Brian suffered a stroke and fell to the bedroom floor. So, the 6-year-old German Shepherd didn't think twice and immediately took action to help him.

Sadie immediately jumped out of bed to lie down next to him and comfort him by licking his face.

“I thought maybe I could use her as a counterweight to get me off the floor, and I grabbed her collar to try to do that,” says Brian. "Somehow he instinctively knew he was helping me with his weight, pushing me hard enough to give me the momentum to get out of the corner where I was stuck."

Accompanied by his loyal dog, Brian managed to go down the stairs to go to his cousin who called for help. The man was then taken to the hospital to undergo therapy and recover from the stroke. Last Tuesday he was discharged from the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation and was finally able to hug his Sadie again, to the applause of the medical staff, visibly moved by the extraordinary affection that binds dog and owner.

A second chance for both Brian and Sadie

Mr. Myers adopted Sadie last October after the dog had been abandoned by her owner.

“Although the dog was quite nervous with people due to the trauma, Brian felt he had a special bond with Sadie as he appreciated her intelligence, her fear of trusting and the great loyalty once that trust built up. Brian gave Sadie a second chance at life by adopting Sadie and welcoming her home "- explain the volunteers of the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge. - "And this time Sadie gave Brian a second chance at life."

Thanks to her promptness and her great loyalty, Sadie will be rewarded with theHeroic Dog Award dalla PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

"Sadie's intelligence and tenacity saved Brian's life" - PETA Vice President Colleen O'Brien said. - "Her heroism reminds us that many loving and devoted dogs are waiting in shelters for a family to welcome them and PETA encourages anyone with the skills and resources to care for an animal to adopt one from a local shelter."

Heroes don't always wear a cloak, sometimes they have four legs and live indoors with us or in a kennel waiting for a better life!
