Researchers from the University of Catania have sequenced the genome of the "Feminello" lemon: a result that also has practical implications

La Sicilia is known all over the world for its wonderful and fragrant citrus fruits: there are numerous species and varieties, some of which are endemic to the island's territory - such as the Syracusan Feminello lemon, whose genome has just been sequenced by researchers from the University of Catania, in collaboration with the Edmund Mach Foundation (which in the past has already dealt with the genomic sequencing of numerous species of fruit - such as apple, strawberry, vine, pear, walnut - but also of plants such as Drosophila suzukii, Plasmopara viticola and silver fir).

From today, therefore, the genetic code of the lemon, variety "Feminello from Syracuse”, Is available to the international scientific community. The knowledge of the exact position and function of the genes (about 35 thousand) will provide researchers from all over the world with useful information for the study of characters of agronomic interest, but will have practical effects on the lemon production sector: knowing the complete genome of the plant will significantly accelerate the selection processes of lemon varieties naturally more resistant to diseases (such as malsecco, a fungus that attacks the plant and causes its withering and death) and to climate change, which have a high re-flowering and a high health value.

The results of this study add to the genomes of the genus Citrus already sequenced, such as sweet orange, clementine, cedar, pomelo (also called pummelo, represents the oldest citrus cultivated by man), and with these it can provide important information on the history evolution of citrus fruits (not only in Sicily): for example, thanks to genomic sequencing, the hybrid origin of lemon, fruit of the cross between cedar and bitter orange, has been confirmed.
