Without tourists, the Earth is repopulated with wild animals (even rare)

Nature proves to be able to recover quickly from the constant insults of mankind: without tourism, wild species have increased.

Canceled flights, stopped cruise ships e postponed holidays at a later date they have caused significant economic losses in the tourism sector but have also led to some advantage for the planet.

In fact, in various areas of the world, significant reductions in carbon emissions and significant repopulation by land and marine wildlife have been recorded. (Read also: Coronavirus has caused global CO2 emissions to plummet by 17%, bringing them back to 2006 levels)

Numerous species that usually remain hidden because disturbed by our presence, have "come out into the open" especially in those areas very popular with tourists. In Thailand, for example, leatherback turtles - an endangered species - have returned to lay their eggs on the beach of Phuket, which is generally assaulted by visitors. The Dermochelys coriacea is the largest turtle in the world and prefers to nest in isolation.

La reduction of marine traffic and the consequent decrease in noise, has then allowed whales from various areas of the world to communicate with each other more efficiently. Marine biologists this year recorded whale songs never heard before, probably because they were covered by the din of ships.

In the waters of the Kenya, on the other hand, there seems to have been an increase in starfish, generally victims of tourists who extract them from the water to take selfies, causing their death in a few minutes. (Read also: Not everyone knows, but it takes a few seconds out of the water for starfish to die)

Populations of many fish species have also increased, including clownfish, emperor fish, and the highly poisonous stonefish.

According to experts, it is a message very clear: nature knows how to recover quickly from the continuous damage inflicted by humans. This however does not mean that we should stay indoors forever and quit travel, but that we should start doing it responsibly and to have respect and care for the environment and for the animals that live on the planet.

When the coronavirus emergency is resolved, we could consider change the way we travel. For example, we may opt for sustainable vacations and, instead of making many short trips throughout the year, make arrangements for long stays occasional. This would significantly reduce emissions related to travel and would allow us to really know the place we decide to visit. Really getting in touch with the host country could give us more incentives a preserve its nature.
