Learn to read and write braille playing and having fun: this is the idea behind the Braille Bricks Project, an initiative that, thanks to colorful bricks similar to building blocks, on the model of the famous Lego, favors literacy and social inclusion of blind children.

The initiative was launched by an organization in São Paulo, Brazil, the Dorina Nowill Foundation for the Blind, in collaboration with a communication agency. The colored bricks can be used by both sighted and blind children, allowing them to play and have fun together, without distinction.

For blind children, however, there is an additional benefit: in fact, there are twenty-six blocks and each of them reproduces a letter of the alphabet in Braille. By touching them and playing, the child has the opportunity to gradually appropriate the braille writing system, learning almost without realizing it, in a fun and light-hearted way.

To date, the Foundation has managed to produce a number of bricks sufficient to be used by about 300 young students: the hope is that, through the Creative Commons license, the initiative will have an even greater following, spreading to various countries around the world and allowing a growing number of blind children to have an extra tool to overcome disability.

This license, in fact, allows both to reproduce the design and graphics of the bricks for free and to adapt them to different needs: the only condition is that the results of these reproductions / readjustments are disseminated under the same license.

An intelligent solution to stimulate the sharing of the concept and encourage as much as possible the dissemination of an idea that can contribute to improve the life of many blind children, stimulating them to learn and providing them with a toy to use together with their able-bodied friends.
