An unusual starfish with a side b very pronounced was photographed by a tourist in an aquarium. The shot immediately went viral. But, obviously, what we see is not what we think ...

Starfish of the Mediaster aequalis species are famous for their bright orange-red color and the symmetry of their five arms. But one specimen these days is becoming famous for a body part not usually associated with this marine animal: a very pronounced hindquarters!

Twitter user @Babyshoujo recently photographed and shared an image of a starfish clinging to a rock at an exhibit at the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California.

The photo was shared along with a series of more or less obvious jokes about his alleged "butt". However, experts are keen to point out that what we see is not exactly what it seems ...

What we see in the photo are the contracted muscles of the starfish's arms as they grasp the rock. This was explained by Nate Jaros, curator of fish and invertebrates at the Aquarium of the Pacific.

Jaros also recalled the importance of these animals in marine ecosystems as one "Key species" or a species upon which other species depend. He added that water pollution and rising water temperatures in the ocean are causing a lot of inconvenience to starfish.

What can we do to protect them? First of all, but for us it is taken for granted, do not buy them dry or dead in souvenir shops and then respecting them if we are lucky enough to spot them.
