The Amazon rainforest is disappearing visibly, amidst fires and deforestation. But nobody seems to care

According to a report by the NGO Imazon, in the last 12 months there has been a + 57% in the phenomenon of deforestation in the Amazon

The impoverishment of the 'green lung' of our planet continues. According to a report by the NGO Imazon, in the last 12 months there has been a + 57% in the phenomenon of deforestation in the Amazon, thanks to the reckless political actions of President Bolsonaro.

The plague of deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, the green lung of the Earth. The non-governmental organization imazon, who has been monitoring the health of the forest for years, photographs a very serious situation. In just one year, between August 2020 and July 2021, deforestation destroyed a record area of 10.476 km2 (nine times the area of the city of Rio de Janeiro) - a 57% increase compared to the deforestation recorded in the same period of the year. previous one.

Only in July of this year, the Amazon has lost a larger area of forest than that of the city of Sao Paulo and, compared to July of last year, the deforestation rate has leapt forward by 80% (+2.095 km2). The data was obtained through Imazon's Deforestation Alert System (SAD), which has used satellite imagery and radar to monitor the Amazon since 2008. In relation to states, Pará had the largest deforestation in July, with 771 km² of forest. destroyed; Pará was also the state with the largest cleared area in the last 12 months: 4.147 km², 43% more than in the previous calendar.

In Pará, 48% of the forest area destroyed in July was concentrated in just four cities: Altamira, São Félix do Xingu, Itaituba and Novo Progresso. These are common critics who should receive priority actions to combat deforestation, since they are regions that have been among the most deforested in the Amazon for years - he explains Antonio Fonseca, Imazon researcher.

The second Brazilian state most affected by the phenomenon of deforestation was that of Amazonas (in the southern Amazon region), followed in turn by Rondônia:

Mato Grosso, for many years, was among the states that have most deforested in the Amazon, mainly due to the conversion of the forest to plant wheat. NGO volunteers. - However, as of 2019, Amazonas ranks second in the ranking, indicating a shift in logging from established areas to regions with more forests available: the scarcity of vast forest areas in previously devastated regions has brought about a change in deforestation.

The forest is dying, and President Bolsonaro's Brazilian government is doing nothing to save it. Just a couple of months ago, Environment Minister Ricardo Salles was forced to resign because he was involved in illegal timber trafficking. At the end of June, the president deployed army forces to try to stop those who fell trees illegally - with the only result of intimidating and driving away local NGOs who instead move to defend the forest.

But beyond these sensational moves, which attract the attention of the media and public opinion, in reality a real 'negotiation' of the Brazilian government is underway with various world powers (including the United States, United Kingdom, Norway) to put a tax on the Amazon: one billion dollars a year to stop deforestation.

Meanwhile, the forest continues to burn and to be violated by the chainsaws of unscrupulous speculators. A recent study has shown that the Amazon rainforest has now been compromised forever and is unable to play its role as a 'storehouse' of carbon dioxide - instead, it disperses carbon dioxide into the atmosphere like industries and towns.
