Unusual new bloom in the deserts of California. Considered among the driest places in the world, for some years now they have been experiencing the so-called "superbloom", a real explosion of flowers and vegetation that is splendid to see but also disturbing.

Also due to the changing climate, some of the driest areas on the planet are struggling with sudden waves of rain, which cancel out long periods of drought. It happened back in 2017 in California, when the barren and almost lifeless Carrizo Plain National Monument suddenly became a huge expanse of colorful flowers.

And it's happening again, this time at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, where a spectacular and intense flowering is taking place right now due to the constant presence of rains during the winter.

A real event considering that the area is famous for drought. The park is the largest in California, with over 800 miles of dirt roads, 12 wilderness areas, and miles of hiking trails. Here once the dominant colors were those of the earth and the low hills but today it is enough to get to the parking lot and the visitor center to notice a myriad of bright colors.

Yellow, purple, pink, white and orange flowers dot the landscape. The best time to admire them is during the early hours of the morning as they then close in the afternoon heat.

Betsy Knaak, of the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association, he said to NBC 7 that this year's flowering recalls the phenomenon's heyday, in the 70s and 80s:

“It has been an unusual season, there has been heavy rain every month since October. We also had cooler than normal weather for a long time ”.

Knaak, who has lived in the Anza-Borrego Desert since 1978, revealed that the secret to a successful desert bloom, in large part, is due to regular rains in November, followed by winter storms in December and January, and by some thunderstorms in February. At the same time, temperatures must remain mild.

“These rare blooms occur when rainfall levels in the areas are high, combined with a years-long drought that kills nutrient-absorbing weeds and weeds. These conditions cause wild flowers to grow. You can see colorful California poppies, verbena, evening primrose and desert lilies " it is read on the Park website.

If the weather conditions persist, it is possible that the flowering of this desert park could last until April, a real event that occurs rarely.

A show for the lucky ones who will be able to admire it live, even if the doubt remains that at the base of the unusual blooms in the desert there is once again climate change.
