Submerged Park of Gaiola: in the Gulf of Naples, a wonderful marine protected area to be protected

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

A place of nature, history, archeology, centenary wonders. A place like few in the world, one of a kind, a mixture of sea and beauty: it is the Submerged Park of Gaiola which, in the heart of the Gulf of Naples, with an area of just over 40 hectares, extends from the Borgo di Marechiaro to the suggestive Bay of Trentaremi.

A place as beautiful as it is fragile, which with the health emergency has risked and risks being left behind compared to many other places of culture. This is why the National archeologic museum of Naples and a whole network of cultural institutions and universities invite local administrations and citizens "with their conscious behaviors" to support the Gaiola Onlus Interdisciplinary Study Center (CSI) so that "a new paradigm of use of the site is created which put respect for places, visitors and our cultural and environmental heritage first ”.

They do so through an open letter signed by over 50 directors of museums and cultural sites in the area, university professors and managers of the 25 sites in the historic center of Naples united in the Extramann network coordinated by Daniela Savy, cultural operators and environmentalists, from FAI to Marevivo and WWF.

The Submerged Park of Gaiola

The Submerged Park of Gaiola is a wonderful protected marine area and an important site for research, training, scientific dissemination and environmental education for the rediscovery and enhancement of the naturalistic and cultural heritage of the Gulf of Naples. Its peculiarity is that of being a submerged archaeological area - which can be visited through water tours by boat or with snorkeling and diving activities - in which there are volcanological, archaeological and biological elements and many archaeological finds, submerged by bradyseism.

The site and the beach will reopen from tomorrow 3 July and access will be allowed by reservation through the app downloadable from the site of the protected marine area.

By booking via the app it is also possible to access the public bathing area housed in the Submerged Park of Gaiola in zone B of the general reserve.

You can book to access the beach up to a maximum of 75 people for each shift, from 09.00 to 13.00 and from 14.00 to 18.00, the Park will close at 19.00.

Isola della Gaiola: the fascinating cursed island in the Gulf of Naples

The open letter to safeguard the Gaiola Submerged Park

The letter reconstructs the history of the site up to 2002.

“History tells us that, precisely because of the beauty and amenity of the places in the 2002st century BC, the rich Roman Knight Publius Vedio Pollio wanted to build his otium villa here, which he called Pausilypon,“ a place where troubles cease ”. On his death it became an imperial residence, and today the testimonies of this ancient splendor are scattered everywhere, above and below the surface of the sea. […] In more recent times, the area became an obligatory stop for travelers on the Grand tour and then, starting from the end of the nineteenth century, it became the property of wealthy personalities […]. In XNUMX the establishment of the Submerged Park of Gaiola and the patient work of recovery from below by a group of researchers have tenaciously restored dignity and beauty to the site. That group of researchers, the Centro Studi Interdisciplinari Gaiola onlus, is a virtuous example of this city, which the Ministry of the Environment and that of Cultural Heritage, in concert, have recognized as managing body of the Park, and today as then it continues to row always in the same direction, that of safeguarding a priceless common good ".

The Submerged Park of Gaiola is today both a State Marine Reserve (Interministerial Decree 7 August 2002) and a "Place of culture" (art. 101 of Legislative Decree 22 January 2004, n. 42 "Code of cultural heritage and landscape" ).

"As is well known, the Covid emergency has had an explosive effect on the entire country and on the cultural heritage sector which are slowly finding the way to reopen, albeit amidst the many difficulties and a complex regulatory framework to follow to protect the health of citizens. and reopen the doors of our heritage to the world. Among these, the Submerged Park of Gaiola finds itself on a steeper road than many other places of culture, precisely because of its particularity and fragility. While the reopening of various cultural sites, closed for the same reasons, is being welcomed with enthusiasm, and the hoped-for resumption of visits to the neighboring Pausilypon Park is being prepared for 5 July, the risk is that the Submerged Park of Gaiola will be considered merely for issues relating to aspects related to bathing, ignoring the immense historical, cultural and naturalistic value of the site itself ".

Hence the invitation to everyone so that "the reopening to the public of the Submerged Park of Gaiola, after this hard and trying period of crisis for the whole country, is accompanied by a new paradigm of use of the site, which puts the protection of our cultural and environmental heritage while respecting places and visitors ".
