The Municipality of Serra San Bruno, in the province of Vibo Valentia, would have put up for auction the cutting of 2603 trees. The auction is scheduled for next March 25th.
Thus was born one petition to save the Magical Wood of Archiforo from the felling of trees, 1090 of which are made up of tall trees. In the park there are some monumental specimens of Abies alba, which are part of a Site of Community Importance and of the Serre Regional Natural Park - as reported on the website Hunger For The South.
Il almost centenary wood it is formed by fir and beech trees and represents a real paradise of biodiversity. The cutting of trees would cause serious damage to the balance of ecosystems. Archiforo hosts one of the oldest fir trees in Europe, which is most likely one of the largest specimens of its species, with over 5,5 meters in circumference and a height of just over 55 meters.
Il Regional Natural Park of Serre, established in 1990, covers an area of over 17 thousand hectares and includes the wetland of international value of Lake Angitola. The park area includes places of naturalistic, cultural, historical and anthropological value. In its territory we find the typical fir trees, characterized by the presence of silver fir, the pinetine of the throwing pine and beech, chestnut, poplar and oak groves.
Il Wood of Archiforo it stands on an area of over 4000 hectares and is almost completely located in the municipality of Serra San Bruno, within the same Serre Park. The fauna is characterized by the presence of wild cat, of the scops owl - also known as dwarf owl - and of the goshawk, a bird of prey.
The launch of the petition on Avaaz and the spread of the alarming news on the internet caused a rapid response by the Mayor of Serra San Bruno, Bruno Rosi, who specifies that Archiforo's secular silver fir will not be felled.
"It deals with - Rosi said - of three cutting projects which arise from the indications contained in the Forest settlement plan drafted by the experts ofUniversity of Calabria. A work that we inherited having been commissioned by the previous administration and, on the basis of which, a 'hammering' was carried out, that is the signaling of trees to be felled, which dates back to last April. We went on the spot and checked that only one tree among these of great proportions, not the one indicated on the internet, has been inserted and has a cavity at the base so it would be preferable to be cut to prevent it from causing damage to others ".
“However, we will ask the technicians of the University of Reggio Calabria - continued the mayor - to re-check all the work done and, if necessary, of review the choices made. What I can say is that it was one exploitation beautiful and good because the cut was not decided, as some have argued, to replenish the coffers of the Municipality. And this can be easily deduced from the documentation that we make available to those who wish to investigate the question ”.
