New test shows many shower shampoos contain controversial ingredients: phenoxyethanol, peg, allergenic fragrances and more
Don't store avocado like this: it's dangerousFor us, but especially for our children, we should always try to buy products that are safe and free of potentially dangerous substances, and this is true even if we consider bathroom products. A new test compared different shower shampoos and found that not all of them are "clean" and therefore advisable.
Il Salvagente magazine, in one of its latest tests, wanted to analyze and compare 8 shower-shampoo (4 for adults and 4 for children), very practical products to use especially when we play sports and in our bag we want to optimize the space by bringing a single soap useful for body and hair.
These are the 8 products sampled:
For adults
- Neutromed energizing sport
- Adidas Shower gel Active Start 3
- Vidal Energizing Shower Shampoo
- Neutral Roberts invigorating shower shampoo
For children (these are not baby products)
- Spider man shower shampoo - Naturaverde
- Soap Bath Shower Shampoo "cotton candy" - Palieri
- Air Wal Shower gel Shampoo Paw Patrol
- Disney Bubble Bath
The results
One thing that immediately catches the eye if we buy these products is the really disproportionate price between shower-shampoo for adults and the corresponding price for children. The latter in fact comes to cost an average of 12 euros per liter against 6,50 for the adult product.
But now let's move on to the unwanted ingredients found inside the shower-shampoos. The Lifebuoy signals the presence of:
- ethoxylates, including Pegs: substances produced by ethylene oxide which may have dioxane residues and are harmful to aquatic organisms. With only two exceptions, they are present in all samples
- allergenic fragrances: in all but one of the samples
- phenoxyethanol: preservative which has possible toxic effects on reproduction
- butylphenyl methylpropional (present in two products): recently classified as a CMR substance, i.e. carcinogenic, mutagenic and toxic for reproduction. From 2022 it is likely that its use will be banned in the EU
- Iodopropynyl Butylcarba-mate: preservative considered by Echa as an endocrine disruptor as well as suspected of triggering allergic dermatitis
- Chlorphenesin: another controversial preservative considered persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic
- Polyquaternium: poorly biodegradable synthetic polymers. As for health, Polyquaternium-7 could release acrylamide
- DMDM Hy-dantoin: a formaldehyde liberator
The worst shower-shampoos
The worst shower shampoo for adults turned out to be the branded one Neutro Roberts which contains Peg, phenoxyethanol, preservatives and various allergens. Vidal also failed Energizing Shower Shampoo.
As for children's products, however, the two worst products were found to be:
- Disney Bubble Bath (which contains ethoxylates, preservatives, various allergens and other unwelcome ingredients).
- Air Wal Shower gel Shampoo Paw Patrol (which among other things contains Peg, ethoxylates, phenoxyethanol, controversial preservatives and potentially allergenic fragrances).
