While on a walk in Australia, entomologist Jurgen Otto came across a small arachnid he had never been in contact with before. It was the Australian peacock spider, also called Maratus volans or Peacock spider, which measures just over 45 millimeters, is able to escape by hopping irregularly and carries with it a real rainbow of colors, visible when it lifts the flaps of the back of the body in the mating ritual.

“When I arrived in Sydney I was a little bored, because there wasn't enough to photograph, but now I don't want to live anywhere else. I think it is the most beautiful spider in the world“, Says the entomologist, author of magnificent shots of the most beautiful spider in the world. The Maratus volans, to attract females, raises its “wings”, so splendidly colored, like a sort of fan.
He does this by lifting himself up on two legs, this is how he reveals the colored extensions, and vibrating as it moves from side to side, in an attempt to woo his female counterpart. Unfortunately, if the dance does not impress the female, the male could end up becoming his prey.
Although fear of spiders is the most common specific phobia worldwide, Jurgen Otto's photos are certainly a good way to rehabilitate the image of these extraordinary creatures.
