The terrible consequences of overprotective parents on their children
Children indeed they fail to explore the world - their most important mission early in life - if their parents do not grant them the right freedom and are constantly striving to protect them from even non-existent dangers.
The side effect for children is soon said: children of overprotective parents will find it difficult to manage their problems on their own as they grow up if they have not learned how to solve the difficulties independently.
If parents are always close to their children, children will tend to turn to mum and dad to find answers and solutions without trying to use their wits.
According to experts, parents try to protect their children so that children's lives are less stressed but they have exactly the opposite effect. Children of overprotective parents may experience anxiety and depression.
Some parents would like their children to live a perfect life forgetting that perfection does not exist. Children may struggle to develop a healthy self-esteem that advances them in life as assertive people and able to overcome difficulties even without parental support.
Sometimes overprotective parents just can't stand that their children have to face difficulties to be able to achieve results, so they take to the field to help them. In this way, however, the children will not have the opportunity to test and grow their personal skills and consequently they will not even develop self-confidence.
How to recognize overprotective parents
Overprotective parents:
- They prevent children from maturing
- They threaten the self-esteem of their children
- They raise non-autonomous children
- They achieve the opposite effect to what is desired
- They can cause anxiety and depression in children
- They cause stress in children instead of relieving it
- They do not ensure the happiness of the children
- They do not teach their children to deal with the difficulties of life
What to do?
When parents do everything for their children, or worse, for their children, they are preventing them from maturing and becoming adults. One of the most important tasks of parents is to prepare their children to be independent, autonomous adults with healthy self-esteem and self-confidence.
It is right for parents to help their children when they have to face insurmountable difficulties but at the same time they should not suffocate them or replace them when it comes to solving the small problems of everyday life.
Only by granting their children the right freedom and autonomy will they be able to avoid unwanted consequences for their lives.
