Sacred Heart: what it symbolizes

For the faithful of the Catholic religion it represents the heart of Jesus Christ, a symbol of his love for humanity. The flame on the top symbolizes the inextinguishable and transformative fire of divine love, the mercy of Christ. The wounds, the crown of thorns, the cross evoke his death and his sacrifice.

The first testimonies are ancient, dating back to the Late Middle Ages, but the cult began to flourish during the seventeenth century thanks to St. John Eudes and in particular to the mystical revelations of St. Margaret Maria Alacoque. The first feast dedicated to the Sacred Heart was celebrated in France in 1685, but it became universal for the entire Catholic Church in 1856 thanks to Pope Pius IX.

Today the Sacred Heart continues to be the object of religious worship, but it has gone further. Many artists and artisans revisit it with creativity and in Mexico, where it enjoys great popularity, it is teeming with colorful “Sagrados Corazones” of every shape and material. Now famous all over the world.
