According to a recent study, the steady and uninterrupted rise in temperatures could jeopardize crops in the future

According to a recent study, India will see a substantial decline in crop pathogens, but the steady and uninterrupted rise in temperatures could jeopardize crops equally.

There are already many studies that look with concern at climate changes which will take place in the next few years. One of them tried to understand how global warming will affect crops and crops - which will increase in some parts of the world and decrease in others. Countries located in the Northern Hemisphere (in particular Europe, China and the east of the United States) will become increasingly vulnerable to climate change: on the contrary in countries such as Brazil, India and Southeast Asia there will be a decline in pathogens that they attack crops.

Currently there are many pathogens that attack Indian crops (especially rice, coconut and mango), but the results of this study show that there will be a progressive decrease in their virulence precisely because of the rise in temperatures, which will make life impossible for them. Each pathogen needs some ideal conditions (geographic, climatic, seasonal) that allow it to 'attach' to a specific crop. When the climate changes, these ideal conditions fail. However, rising temperatures will also damage crops, causing them to end.

Indian researchers observed eighty fungal pathogens and oomycetes, and compared current climatic conditions (2011-2030) with predictions made for the future (2061-2080), using four global climate models and noting the differences between the two scenarios. : it has emerged that changing the pathogen mix has negative effects everywhere in the world - not only in the countries that will suffer the most from the heat (such as India) but also in 'western' countries (such as the United Kingdom).

Agriculture must have time to plan and prepare for the future, and the future is practically already here - they explain authors. - We have only a few decades left, while adaptation of crops to new climates and new threats can take a long time. This is why we must think about defending crops from pathogens that have not yet arrived: many of these, especially those now found in the tropical areas of the planet, have not yet been properly studied. We need to invest time and resources to learn more about these diseases if we are to try to save crops around the world.
