Are the reducers that are often used for newborns safe products? According to a Consumer Reports survey, the answer is no. In fact, several cot deaths occurred precisely because of these objects.

According to what Consumer Reports put in black and white in its survey, between 2012 and 2018 in the United States 12 infants allegedly lost their lives due to some unsafe sleep aids. The findings are based in part on data the magazine received from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) which inadvertently disclosed information on specific products involved in domestic accidents.

Last week, the CPSC released a report in which it recognized at least 73 infant deaths associated with inclined sleep products. Reference is made above all to various bouncers and cradles (you will probably remember the case of the Culletta Rock 'n Play Fisher Price).

But now the alarm is also raised on 3 new bed reducers that would have caused other deaths, specifically the:

Baby Delight Snuggle Nest Infant Sleeper

Equipped with a flat mattress but which also has a removable shaped inclined wedge that allows babies to be positioned with an inclination of about 12 degrees. This would have resulted in the deaths of 3 children.

SUMR Brands product equipped with a flat mattress and low slatted sides. Due to this device 2 newborns would have died.

a kind of pillow with soft side bumper. This too would have resulted in the deaths of two children.

In all cases it is reducers that parents often use for co-sleeping inside the bed, in order to separate one's own bodies from that of the newborn which, at least apparently, would be safer.

While other factors may have contributed to the deaths of some children, Consumer Reports experts say it remains a staple: the above products have not been adequately tested for safety and do not comply with the American Academy of Pediatrics' safe sleep recommendations.

As is known, infants should sleep on their backs and on a flat surface, so they should never "sink" into the support, sleep in an inclined position or be surrounded by padding or pillows of any kind. We therefore always remember these recommendations, which have long been shared by the international scientific community.
