If you spilled liquid on your laptop keyboard, no panic: here are the tricks to save it (and what not to do)

What to do to try to "save" our laptop if we have spilled some liquid on the keyboard? Here are all the tips

Those who spend many hours in front of a laptop screen every day may be used to sipping a drink - hot or cold depending on the season - to stay hydrated, but also to be more focused on the work they are doing.

But what happens if, absently, you make a careless gesture with your hand and spill the contents of the cup or glass right on the keyboard of our laptop? Are you committing an irreparable disaster or is it possible to recover your PC and all the precious files contained within it?

Much depends on the amount of liquid poured on the keyboard, on the extent of the liquid itself but, above all, on the our speed in dealing with the situation. So, before panic takes over, let's take a deep breath and immediately turn off the PC, eventually disconnecting it from the power supply. This way we don't run the risk of shorting the device and getting shocked.

After securing our device, let's fold it into a V and arrange it "upside down" on a table, perhaps on absorbent paper sheets. We wait a few moments for the liquid, whatever it is, to drip towards the paper. After the dripping appears to be over, we pick up the computer and wipe away what's left of the liquid with blotting paper that leaves no residue.

We then try to disassemble the computer. Unfortunately it is not always possible to carry out this operation, since the physical components of many devices (especially the smaller and more compact ones) are welded together or glued. If we manage to unscrew the "mask" that contains the keyboard's electrical circuits, we use a microfiber cloth to remove the rest of the liquid deposited inside.

Taking care not to move the cables and sensors, we carefully dry each key and housing. A particular care is to be used if the drink spilled on the computer was sweetened (such as a fruit juice) or sour (like an orange juice or a fizzy drink in a can): in these cases we use cotton swabs soaked in denatured alcohol to remove all traces of liquid.

Be careful not to resort to two methods that are particularly popular on the web, but harmful to the health of our computer: the rice and the hair dryer. In fact, many recommend covering the keyboard with uncooked rice, which absorbs liquids and humidity, but this is a harmful suggestion, as well as harmful: small grains of rice could penetrate under the keyboard and damage the circuits.

Even using the warm air jet of the hairdryer to repair the damage is wrong: you risk further compromising the health of the computer by generating electrostatic shocks that irreparably damage the electronic components of the device.

After we have done everything possible to try to "save" our laptop, we recommend that you leave it at least twenty-four hours off and openso that it can dry completely. After a day of rest, let's try to turn it back on, crossing our fingers ...
