Dog droppings on the street? The Spanish city of Alcanar, in Montsià, wants cleaner streets, so to fight incivility it launches an innovative project for genetically identify dog feces and trace the names and surnames of the owners of the four-legged friends.

A project that is already being discussed, but which according to the administration is an excellent solution to avoid having to do the slalom among the excrements that are not collected on the sidewalks.

In practice, a technological system for identifying dog feces will be tested in Alcanar to then trace the identification of the owners and punish those responsible.

Recall that the system is already functioning in Parets del Vallès, one of the first municipalities that has already fined dog owners and which sees improvements in the sense of civility (even if required by law).

How will it work? Anyone who owns a dog has three months to have the animal do a free blood sample at the veterinary centers of the municipality. From the blood, the experts will then obtain a genetic profile with the DNA bank, in this way it will be known who the dog belongs to.

The program is called Can-ID and is developed by VetGENOMICS, with the participation of the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a company expert in veterinary genetic diagnostics and animal genomics.
But if you are already on the verge of thinking about a waste of public money, know that the entire project was funded from below, by the citizens themselves, apparently fed up with an unsustainable situation.

According to Juan Roig, mayor of Alcanar, the Can-ID will identify with names and surnames, those responsible for the droppings abandoned in the streets and in the parks.

“We want dog feces to stop being a problem for pedestrians. Unfortunately, there is no civic sense in the city, but the street belongs to everyone and therefore we have to deal with this problem ”, says the mayor.

The Can-ID is a DNA identifier composed of 128 markers that will guarantee, according to experts, a foolproof system, without the risk of foreign contamination, such as the urine of other dogs.

The pilot project will start on April 15th and end on June 15th. During this period, pet owners are obliged to carry out analyzes and in return they will receive an identification plate to be placed in the pet's collar.

And who will be caught? The penalties for non-recovery of manure will cost a fine of up to 700 euros.
