In autumn the leaves fall and Nature takes on new colors. Or not? In Japan, in the middle of October, we are witnessing a completely out of season phenomenon: the famous cherry blossom or hanami.

Delicate cherry blossoms usually welcome spring by creating a pink carpet in Japan, from the foothills of Mount Fuji to various areas and parks across the country. Tourists from all over the world flock to admire the hanami every year. In April, in May, but not in October.

According to experts, the late blooms could be the result of this year's unusual weather, including a particularly active typhoon season. Japan was hit by a series of typhoons this year, including Jebi, which claimed 11 lives and closed Kansai Airport in September.

Weathernews, a meteorological company, said more than 300 people across Japan reported seeing cherry blossoms in their neighborhood in a survey conducted last week.

Outside, white and pink color the most famous sites where hanami can be admired in spring. Too bad it's autumn.

Secondo Hiroyuki Wada, a botanist with the Flower Association of Japan, unusual weather patterns could be responsible for this surprise, off-season bloom.

In addition, according to Wada, the cherry trees may have blossomed for the second time in a year violent storms who have torn off the leaves. The latter usually release a chemical that inhibits flowering before spring.

A series of unusually hot days after the typhoons it could also have "confused" the plants.

“It had happened before, but I don't remember ever seeing anything this large,” Wada said.

What will happen to the next hanami in spring 2019?

Will it be at risk? No, according to Wada since, although abundant, only a few shoots have opened now. An autumn that looks like spring, we too had noticed it, probably quoting the usual phrase: “There are no more half seasons”, but Nature shows the signs, beautiful and disturbing.
