First heat wave: make a DIY bird watering hole, it's that easy

The sudden heat is putting a strain on the birds of our cities. Due to record temperatures, swifts and other species fall collapsed from nests and trees, especially the smallest and most vulnerable.

Often the birds go in search of a cool shelter and some water to refresh themselves. Why not build a bird bath on our window sill or balcony? It takes very little to make one, but it can make all the difference for a hot and thirsty bird.

What it takes to build a bird bath tub

To create a tank for the birds to cool down, you need to:

  • A flat bowl (such as a coaster or saucer)
  • One stone or several stones smaller than the bowl
  • Fresh water

Bear in mind that most birds prefer levels of less than 5cm of water to bathe safely. To avoid bowls with a too smooth base, such as ceramic ones because if the birds feel the surface too slippery they avoid stopping there as they would risk slipping and would not be ready to flee quickly in case of danger. Inside the bowl it is advisable to put some stones, in order to create small islands in the middle on which the birds can perch.

Where to place it

If you have a large enough balcony or window sill, you can place the bird tray there. Beware, however, if there are cats in the house or nearby. In that case, the ideal would be to install the bird bath about two meters high. Alternatively, you can hang the water trough in a tree using a rope or metal hook to secure it. Remember to change about twice a week and to clean the tray from time to time to remove any dead insects, debris left by birds and prevent algae formation.
