Etna eruption: rain of stones and ash, the airport closed. The images of our readers

It is one of the most spectacular eruptive activities of recent years. Tall lava fountains and incandescent magma flows from Etna are making a show in Sicily and also in Calabria, where the flow is clearly visible.

To testify it are many readers who are sending us their images and their testimonies. They are the ones who told us about the copious rain of ash and lapilli that reached Catania, with the fall of stones up to one centimeter in size.

The activity began with "a lava overflow from the eastern side of the South East crater which produced a modest collapse of the cone flank, generating a pyroclastic flow that developed along the western wall of the Bove valley". In practice, part of a wall of the volcanic cone of the South East gave way, letting the magma escape.

Meanwhile, the international airport of Catania has been closed due to the possible damage that the lava ash could cause. The column of smoke and ash emitted from the South-East crater is over a kilometer high and the darkness does not allow to guarantee the safety of flights.

The ash and lapilli will probably cause disruption to the circulation, as happened in the past. But in Catania and its surroundings they are used to the roar of the volcano. And for now the inhabitants are enjoying the show.

THE TESTIMONY OF OUR ENEMY

“This time the lava came down even faster than usual, in about an hour or so. Our luck is that you have the Valle del Bove which acts as a basin and collects it. But in the past the lava also reached the town of Mascali, destroying it. It was 1928 ... The eruption of 1928 is the only eruptive event, from the eighteenth century to today, which caused the destruction of an inhabited center of Etna "
