Syngenta, a multinational producer of GMOs and pesticides based in Switzerland, has been declared legally responsible for themurder of Valmir de Oliveira, Brazilian farmer known as Keno, and for the attempted murder of Isabel de Souza Nascimento.

Both were members of Via Campesina and were victims of attacks by armed guards occurred at the behest of the multinational in 2007. Judge Pedro Ivo Moreiro established it at the first Civil Court of Cascavel County.

The multinational will have to compensate the keno relatives and Isabel for the moral and material damage it caused. The lawsuit was filed in 2010, with an attempt to obtain answers from the state regarding the Syngenta's responsibility in the attack occurred by private armed guards at Santa Tereza do Oeste in 2007.

The peasants of Via Campesina had protested against the illegal GMO experiments conducted by Syngenta. Isabel Nascimento dos Santos, a survivor of the attempted murder, said she was happy with the judge's decision, well beyond the financial reimbursement.

During the attack organized by Syngenta in 2007, Isabel was seriously injured. Finally, in her opinion, justice has recognized Syngenta's guilt in the incident. That Syngenta's responsibility has been declared is indeed an exception to the rule, given that the multinationals of GMOs seem not to follow rules for their experiments, but not even in respect of human rights.

The story dates back to October 21, 2007, when an armed group consisting of about 40 men from the private security company NF attacked the field where Syngenta was experimenting with transgenic crops in the locality of Santa Tereza do Oreste. The camp had been occupied by about 150 members of Via Campesina.

The farmers they had reported what Syngenta was accomplishing. That is, she was leading illegal experiments with GM corn in a buffer zone of the Iguaçu National Park, a practice prohibited by the Biosecurity law. The transgenic crops and the use of pesticides they were preventing peasants and native peoples from growing their own food according to tradition. The peasants had decided to fight for their rights and against the privatization of seeds.

Syngenta holds 19% of the agrochemical market and is the third highest-profit seed marketing company in the world. L'use of violence to attack peasants it's unforgivable. Finally, the multinational will pay for what it has done, or at least we hope it will, even if any cash reimbursement will not bring the murdered farmer back to life.

In the area where the attack took place, is now active the Research Center in Agroecology born in honor of Keno. The evidence against Syngenta is considered overwhelming, but unfortunately the multinational could file an appeal against the judge's decision. The hope is that the defense of human rights can prevail.
